Botanical for Student One
Botanical creates a dynamic entry experience within Student One’s Wharf Street foyer. The artwork was conceived, scaled, and configured by Waterson in response to the foyer’s spatial qualities and it’s location within the greater precinct. Botanical references the flora that collects along Adelaide Street’s rock face adjacent to Student One. The artwork consists of a series of wall-mounted and hanging works (with integrated artwork lighting); gathering as geometric orchids and lichens; collecting on interior walls and structure as abstract leaf and flower forms.
Botanical’s dimension, form and placement heightens the arrival experience as visitors and residents move through the space; visually connects the foyer spaces over two levels; mediates the scale of the architecture; and orientates visitors and residents. It parallels the gathering of students from diverse origins and their growth via the experiences, learning and networks developed while studying in Brisbane.
The artwork speaks of Waterson’s ability to integrate transformative and highly detailed artworks that respond to place. Botanical was commissioned by Student One under the Brisbane City Council Percent for Art Contribution Scheme helping to deliver Council’s vision for a vibrant and creative city.
